The President and I are deeply sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Nikola Tesla. We are grateful for his contribution to science and industry and to this country.
âEELEANOR ROOSEVELT,
January 12, 1943
Five days after the Roosevelt memorandum, Alice Monaghan, a floor maid for The New Yorker Hotel, went past the âDo Not Disturbâ sign on Teslaâs door and entered. Except for a pair of leggings, the inventor was completely nude, lying dead on his bed. He was eighty-six years old. Dr. Palmer, who filled out Teslaâs death certificate, wrote in the coronerâs report that Tesla died âsuddenly . . . while asleep,â and further, that there was ânothing suspicious.â8
Described as having been in failing health the last two years of his life, the inventor had displayed a cadaverous appearance throughout most of the previous year, due, most likely, to a restricted diet of vegetables and a thin soup prepared specially for him by a hotel chef. The help at the hotel described the inventor as a peculiar man who constantly washed his hands and would not allow any of them to come within three feet of him.9
Rumors persisted that Tesla might have been murdered by Nazi saboteurs posing as OSS agents who were after the inventorâs particle weaponry papers. Names were even dropped, such as Otto Skorzeny, an SS commandant and Hitlerâs âgo-to guyâ for helping Mussolini escape and other clandestine ops, including a failed attempt to assassinate the Big Three: Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt.10 However, anyone who had seen the emaciated inventor in the last few weeks and days of his life would have realized the simple truth: Tesla died of old age.
